morganhill I know, I know, this is not a new piece of news for those of us who make Morgan Hill our home. Think of it as old news is new again.

What is news is the fact that after three years, it looks like the City of Morgan Hill just might try and get some money out of the folks we have to thank for this contamination of the cities wells - the Olin Corporation.

For those that don't know the details of the perchlorate contamination (just that we have it), perchlorate is one of the chemicals used to create road flares (among other amazing things). The Olin Corporation manufactured road flares in the area for decades.

According to the Morgan Hill Times most recent article on the subject, the city has paid something like $3 Million for systems to deal with the contamination and consumers have been hit up for over $900,000 in the last three years to clean up what is there. Of course, since the city gets all its operating funds from us - that boils down to nearly $4 Million that this fiasco has cost us - and I do mean US, as in you and me.

While attempts have always been made to point the finger at someone other than Olin, the fact remains that it is hard to imagine a different source for the perchlorate contamination. How much convincing should it take when Olin used something in the order of 150,000 pounds of the stuff... every year... for DECADES.

It would have to be one heck of a coincidence for the source of the contamination to be coming from somewhere else.

I don't think we are making a huge leap of logic to attribute the contamination to the company that used hundreds of thousands of pounds of perchlorates per year for decades right here on Tennant instead of to some mystery spot out in the boonies.

In any event, the steps the City of Morgan Hill are taking are encouraging (and frankly, long overdue). The idea of saddling the residents of Morgan Hill with the expense of dealing with this mess just is not tolerable.

If that is not enough for you, feel free to run a search on perchlorates on google, plenty of material out there.
